Joseph E. Foss, Managing Director

Joe Foss oversees SC&H Transition Advisors, a team within SC&H Group focused on assisting companies in the midst of change. With more than 35 years of experience in a variety of industries, including banking, professional sports, and elder care – Joe has significant experience steering organizations through major challenges, transitions and corporate turnarounds. Joe is the former Chief Administrative Officer for Erickson Retirement Communities and Chief Operating Officer for the Baltimore Orioles. He has held various leadership positions within banks, including serving as Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of First American Bank in Washington, DC.

Joe’s practical experiences and responsibilities as a seasoned day-to-day operating executive and deep knowledge of banking and credit operations give him credibility and insight into the challenges many companies are facing today. He has driven revenues and developed marketing strategies; managed cash flow and operating expenses; raised capital and directed banking relationships; restructured companies and management teams; sold assets and initiated a startup company; and managed construction and real estate development operations. He also helped guide the largest geriatric medical practice in the U.S. and participated in the development of a new electronic medical records system.

As a former banker and chief lending officer of a major U.S. banking company, Joe has been involved in countless financings of middle market companies in hundreds of industries. His 35 years in business has provided him vast experiences in multiple economic cycles.

Joe is active on several local boards including the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Robert Packard Center of ALS Research with Johns Hopkins and Believe in Tomorrow Foundation. Joe received an MBA in Marketing and Finance from Minnesota State University and B.A. in Business Administration from St. Thomas University.


Michael J. Young, CPA, Director

With over 29 years of experience as a Certified Public Accountant, Mike Young offers a depth of understanding and knowledge that proves invaluable to his clients. He serves businesses in a diverse set of industries, including Retail, Distribution, Manufacturing, High-Tech, Construction, Real Estate, Not-For-Profit, and Professional Services.

In addition to performing traditional audit and tax services, Mike performs business valuation and litigation support engagements, including calculation of economic damages and fraud investigations. Mike has served as an expert witness in valuation, fraud and litigation matters in various Federal and state courts.

Mike is a former audit and business advisory Service Manager for a national accounting firm and a former CFO of a large, regional floor covering retailer and contractor. He joined SC&H and was promoted to Director in 1995. Mike's leadership of the tax and business advisory servicespractice has made huge contributions to the growth and reputation of the firm.

He takes an active role in the community and is a Board Member for ARC of Baltimore and Treasurer for Association of Corporate Growth. Mike is a magna cum laude graduate of Towson University. He is an Accredited Business Valuation Specialist, Certified Valuation Analyst, and Certified Public Accountant, licensed to practice in Maryland. Mike is an active member of National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.


Barry Offutt, CPA, Director

Barry Offutt joined the Tax and Advisory Services of Stout, Causey & Horning, P.A. as a Director in January 2005.

Barry focuses on providing audit and review services as well as mergers and acquisitions consulting to SC&H clients in a variety of industries, including Real Estate, Education, and Technology companies.

As a former Manager for an international accounting firm and the Chief Financial Officer for several public and private companies, Barry brings to SC&H the benefit of superior public accounting skills combined with comprehensive experience gained from working in and with a variety of companies. This unique combination of professional knowledge makes him an invaluable part of the SC&H leadership team and a valued resource for his clients.

Barry graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. degree in Accounting from the University of Delaware. He is a Certified Public Accountant licensed to practice in Maryland and Virginia. He is an active member or the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Barry serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland, Loyola Dental Health Outreach, and the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.


Christopher Helmrath, Managing Director

With over 25 years of financial services experience representing public and privately held companies, Chris Helmrath's consulting practice concentrates in the following areas: corporate divestitures and acquisitions; raising debt and equity financing; management consulting; business valuations; and transaction advisory services.

Chris brings an excellent depth of experience across many industries including federal government contracting, information technology, banking and financial services, manufacturing, distribution, consumer products, business services, automobile dealers and not-for-profit institutions.

Chris was named one of SmartCEO Magazine’s "Top Advisors" in Maryland, was  recognized by the Baltimore Business Journal as one of "40 Under 40"  business leaders in the Baltimore business community. He is a frequent national and regional speaker and author on many issues affecting corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions, strategic planning, capital markets and business valuation. Chris holds academic positions in two graduate schools of business: Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College. He currently serves as the Director of the MBA Capstone Program at Johns Hopkins University in addition to teaching within the program. Additionally, Mr. Helmrath is a frequent contributor to the Baltimore Business Journal and the Washington Business Journal.


Nathan E. DiNatale, CPA/ABV, CVA, CFE, Senior Manager
Nathan DiNatale

Nathan DiNatale is a Senior Manager at SC&H, where he manages the firm's Business Valuation and Litigation Support services (BVLS) practice.

With over 14 years of professional experience, his practice areas include fraud, business valuation, litigation support, expert witness, and financial reporting engagements. Nathan has a background in financial statement audits and reviews of clients in industries such as manufacturing, retail, distribution, and service that ranged in size from small rapidly growing closely held companies to large established middle market companies.

Nathan is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and performs fraud related services such as financial statement analysis, forensic investigations, corporate investigations, and fraudulent conveyance analysis. In addition, he works closely with attorneys in connection with litigation involving marital dispute, valuation matters, lost earnings calculations, fraud, and various accounting matters. Nathan is a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) and has experience in business valuations involving real estate entities, manufacturers, distributors, and service companies.

Nathan is a graduate of the University of Baltimore where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He is currently a member of the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Business Valuation and Forensic and Litigation Services Section, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA) and York Chamber of Commerce.
