An error in a client’s withholding tax for employees resulted in a notice from the IRS of a six-figure penalty. Addressing the error, Stuart and his team filed an appeal that got the entire penalty abated. Expert in all aspects of income tax, Stuart provides sophisticated, often overlooked Federal, state and international tax planning services to help clients minimize their present and future tax liabilities. His experience covers a wide range of income tax areas, which include tax compliance, tax provisions, business and individual tax consulting, and cost segregation studies.
Stuart is a reputable audit defense advocate, having successfully defended his clients’ positions in many cases, and as an income tax specialist, has on numerous occasions helped clients preserve capital. Participating in SC&H’s mergers & acquisitions business, Stuart has structured multi-entity companies for the purpose of applying purchase price allocation to minimize tax liabilities and enhance estate planning goals for his clients.
With nearly 20 years of experience, Stuart’s tax acumen covers all forms of for-profit income tax and income tax compliance, including for C corporations, S corporations, Partnerships and Individual. In addition, he performs mergers & acquisitions tax consulting services, stock basis studies, and due diligence for business combinations to ensure buyers protection.
He and his team at SC&H are current on all recent income tax regulations and provisions, such as, for example, new property capitalization regulations affecting the acquisition and disposition of personal property. Stuart serves clients in a variety of industries and of all sizes, including in manufacturing, government contracting, technology, retail services, and real estate. These businesses range in size from small, emerging growth companies to large multi-location public corporations.
Beginning his career with a “Big 4” accounting firm, Stuart joined SC&H as a Tax Senior Manager, and quickly advanced to Director in the firm’s Tax & Audit Services practice.
Stuart earned a B.S. in Accounting from Towson University and a M.S. in Taxation from the University of Baltimore. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed to practice in Maryland, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Family & Children’s Services of Central Maryland, and is an avid children’s sports coach, currently coaching youth baseball and soccer.
