403(b) Fiduciary Responsibilities

Presented by Jania Stout. Jania specializes in consulting with mid-size companies about their corporate sponsored retirement plans. She has an extensive background in providing advice and counsel to plan sponsors regarding both qualified and non-qualified employee benefit plans. She joined PSA Financial in March of 2009. Jania is responsible for the overall delivery of PSA consulting solutions. She is passionate about providing excellent service in all aspects to her clients.

Presented by Frank Cannon, CIMA. Frank is the Vice President – Investments of UBS Financial Services/The CannonToohey Group. He holds a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) designation from the Investment Management Analyst's Association at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Frank was a former member of the national advisory committee of the UBS PaineWebber Investment Consulting Group, is currently a member of the Defined Contribution (DC) Advisory Program of UBS Financial Services Inc., and holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® Designation.

Accounting and Tax Update

Mike Young and Lori Burghauser of SC&H Group delivered the Accounting and Tax Update.

With over 29 years of experience as a Certified Public Accountant, Mike Young offers a depth of understanding and knowledge that proves invaluable to his clients. He serves businesses in a diverse set of industries, including Retail, Distribution, Manufacturing, High-Tech, Construction, Real Estate, Not-For-Profit, and Professional Services.

Lori brings more than 18 years of combined tax and audit experience. Prior to joining SC&H, Lori was a former Tax and Audit Supervisor with a "Big Four" accounting firm. She has provided tax services, including ASC 740-10 (formerly FAS 109) provision services, and performed audits for a varied client base including Fortune 500 companies, Technology companies, Public companies, Not-For-Profits, Manufacturing companies, and middle-market and start-up companies. In addition, Lori has served as a Controller for a growing software company.

Embracing High Standards in Nonprofit Management and Governance

Presented by Amy Coates Madsen. Amy is the Program Director of the Standards for Excellence Institute at Maryland Nonprofits, a national initiative to promote the highest standards of ethics and accountability in nonprofit governance, management, and operations, and to facilitate adherence to standards by all organizations. The Standards for Excellence Institute is a program of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations (Maryland Nonprofits) where Amy has served for more than fifteen years. Amy is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the association’s comprehensive ethics and accountability program and efforts to replicate the program nationally. She serves as a frequent trainer and writer in the areas of board conduct, program evaluation, program replication, fundraising ethics, and nonprofit management. She has taught a course on nonprofit ethics and accountability at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies Certificate Program on Nonprofit Management.

Nonprofit professionals can set their organizations apart by embracing the Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector®.  Session will include an overview and discussion of a range of best practices in nonprofit management and governance in areas such as:

  • Mission and Program Evaluation
  • Governance
  • Conflicts of Interest
  • Human Resources
  • Financial and Legal Issues
  • Openness and Transparency
  • Fundraising
  • Public Policy and Public Affairs

The session included: 

  • best practices using real examples,
  • tools to help nonprofit professionals make better decisions, and
  • a primer for how nonprofits in Maryland can set themselves apart by participating in the Standards for Excellence program and earning the Seal of Excellence.

The New Fundraising Principles: How the Changing Landscape is Shaping the Face of Philanthropy

Presented by Robert 'Bo' Rice. Robert joined CCS in 1987 and, as Senior Vice President and Managing Director responsible for the Mid-Atlantic Region, has provided professional counsel to professional association, healthcare, education, civic, cultural and religious institutions in the United States and Europe. Robert has firsthand experience in directing, managing and supervising capital campaigns that have raised billions of dollars This experience includes endowment fundraising; feasibility studies; annual giving programs, and internal audits. He also has extensive international skills in public relations; foundation, trust and corporate giving; leadership solicitation; volunteer recruitment and retention, training and management; corporate sales and campaign executive consultation.

Through the years, fundraisers have followed a set of key principles to help inform strategy and strengthen relationships with donors. While many of the principles of the past remain true, new fundraising principles have recently emerged as a result of changing times. The new principles reflect the changing world around us and shifting trends in philanthropy, the economy, and politics.

This session discussed:

  • the new principles in fundraising;
  • how development professionals can use this information to advance their organization’s philanthropic efforts; and
  • how the philanthropic landscape will continue to evolve in the immediate future and coming years.
