Forensic Data Analysis / Data Mining

SC&H specializes in analyzing data files to identify entries that do not correspond with your business rules. Our familiarity with data manipulation techniques combined with our experienced personnel who are CPAs, CIAs and CFEs enables us to quickly gather and critically analyze volumes of data.

Electronic data is captured in many formats such as transactional files (general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable), electronic mail systems (.pst files), access logs, data captured by third party providers, and others. Although companies recognize this data exists, they may lack the resources to access, manipulate, and/or combine files to decipher underlying trends or uncover anomalies. Difficulties in accessing the data, unique file formats, as well as the daunting size of data files can complicate matters further.

We utilize the latest software tools to discern obscure patterns in your data and identify the attributes associated with anomalies. Depending on the objectives, a typical project may involve analyzing tens of millions of records from one or disparate systems such as sales, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, and others in an effort to locate anomalies. Successful data mining can also establish gaps or the absence of expected correlations.

Data mining can be successfully employed in any industry to identify instances of fraud, waste, and abuse hidden within these large data files. Data mining can also increase transparency over operational factors such as compliance, utilization, cost recovery, and revenue assurance. Proprietary data mining techniques developed by SC&H have identified violations of procurement policies, vendor consolidation opportunities, over payments, and under reported royalties, all of which have led to cost recoveries, reduced expenses, strengthened internal controls and increased compliance.
